Purpose

To establish district policy that supports Title I parent/family engagement in the Logan City School District.

Definitions

Title I School - A school with a schoolwide program that is a comprehensive reform strategy designed to upgrade the entire educational program; its primary goal is to ensure that all students, particularly those who are low-achieving, demonstrate proficient and advanced levels of achievement on State academic achievement standards.

Technical assistance - providing the advice, assistance, expertise, and training for an identified need or problem.

Parental Engagement - the amount of participation a parent or guardian has when it comes to schooling and her or his child's life.

Policy

The District will adhere to all conditions of the Elementary and Secondary School Act as specified in the parental engagement expectations including but not limited to:

  • Engaging parents in the development and annual review of the District Title I Plan.
  • Providing coordination and technical assistance to promote quality parental engagement activities.
  • Building school and parent capacity for strong parental engagement.
  • Coordinating and integrating parental engagement strategies with other programs.
  • Ensuring that Title I schools are engaging parents in a variety of school activities as listed in 4.2

Title I schools will adhere to all conditions of the Elementary and Secondary School Act as specified in the parental engagement expectations including but not limited to:

  • Developing a Parental Engagement Plan jointly with parents and incorporating it into the School Improvement Plan
  • Conducting an annual meeting to share Title I information with parents.
  • Publishing, at the beginning of each school year, an abstract of the school's Parent Engagement Plan that shall be written in understandable language and, to the extent practicable, provided in a language the parents can understand.
  • Developing and sharing with parents the school-parent compact.
  • Informing parents about the Logan Family Information and Resource Center.

Schools may undertake additional activities to enhance the collaborative relationship between parent, student, and school.

Procedures

The District will involve parents in the development of the District Title I Plan.

A parent, school leadership team member, and principal from each Title I school will be invited to participate in the development of the district plan.

Parents from participating Title I schools will review information, attend scheduled meetings, and give input into the development of the district plan.

The District will involve parents in the process of school review and improvement by:

  • Sharing the achievement data from the District with parents.
  • Inviting input from parents regarding District and school academic goals.

The District will provide coordination and technical assistance to promote parental engagement activities and build school and parent capacity for strong parental engagement by:

  • Coordinating district initiatives pertaining to parent engagement regardless of the funding sources.
  • Providing annual training to school administrators and teachers on effective parent engagement strategies.
  • Assisting schools in the development of their school Parental Engagement Policies.

The District will coordinate parental engagement strategies with other programs.

The Director over Title I and the Director over Special Education will coordinate parent engagement activities with the Title I preschool program and the district special education program, and will meet at least twice a year to discuss plans and coordinate efforts.

The District will conduct an annual parental engagement evaluation.

At the end of the school year, Title I principals, teachers, and parents will be asked to provide feedback on how the District might improve support for parental engagement.

At the beginning of the school year, the District will provide a summary of the parental engagement survey with its plans to address identified needs and recommendations.

The District will ensure that Title I schools are engaging parents in a variety of school activities.

Each Title I school will develop a Parental Engagement Plan, that will be incorporated into the School Improvement Plan and include strategies and processes that will be used to:

  • Inform and assist parents in understanding expected academic standards at the state, district, and school levels.
  • Provide parents with materials and training to help them work with their children to improve achievement, such as literacy, numeracy, and technology training.
  • Help parents and educators work together, reach out, and communicate with each other in order to realize more fully the value and contributions that parental engagement adds to the success of the school.
  • Coordinate parent engagement activities that take place with pre-school, after-school, or any programs or activities in which the school may participate or assist.
  • Receive ongoing parental input (requests, suggestions, ideas, or concerns) such as:
  • Schedule meeting times that are more conducive and flexible to meeting varied schedules;
  • Provide periodic surveys or evaluations with feedback given to parents;
  • Provide correspondence requesting specific feedback on an issue or item of importance. (i.e. Does your child have appropriate homework? If no, what are some suggestions?)

Title I schools will adhere to all conditions of the Elementary and Secondary School Act as specified in the parental engagement expectations including but not limited to:
